About Big Horn Hospital Association
Since 1959, Big Horn Hospital Association has been dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare to Hardin and the surrounding communities. Established with a commitment to meet the evolving health needs of residents in southeastern Montana, Big Horn Hospital has expanded its services and facilities over the decades, becoming an integral part of community life.
In 1974, Big Horn County enhanced local healthcare options by constructing a 34-bed nursing home attached to the hospital, followed by the opening of a new clinic to meet growing patient demands. By 1982, Big Horn Hospital Association further expanded to include an outpatient rehabilitation facility and added resources to accommodate specialized care. These developments positioned Big Horn Hospital to address a range of healthcare needs—from preventive to urgent care—ensuring patients can access essential services close to home.
Meeting Rural Health Needs as a Critical Access Hospital
As healthcare needs grew and reimbursement standards evolved, Big Horn Hospital adapted to continue serving the community effectively. In 2004, the hospital became a designated critical access hospital, ensuring that residents of Big Horn County, along with those in Rosebud and Treasure counties, have reliable, locally-based medical care. This designation also reinforced the hospital’s capacity to provide prompt emergency and critical care for rural communities across an expansive five-thousand-square-mile region with a population of around 13,000.

Since 1979, Big Horn Hospital Association has been operated by a dedicated community board of directors. Guided by a mission to deliver affordable, compassionate, and quality healthcare, the board works collaboratively to support the hospital’s role as a trusted healthcare provider. From board members to medical professionals, Big Horn Hospital Association remains steadfast in its mission to serve as a cornerstone of health and wellness in Big Horn County and beyond.
